About

What is balabs?

The online experiments lab of ba creative labs. We turn classic experiments from psychology and behavioral science into interactions that take a few seconds: you take part, compare your answer with the crowd, and read the research behind the finding.

How does it work?

Every experiment is based on a published study. You don’t need an account to take part; your browser gets an anonymous participant number, and you take each experiment once. The crowd result unlocks once an experiment has at least 30 responses. Until then, the results screen shows values from the literature, clearly labeled “literature”. We never show made-up or sample data.

This is not a lab study

Participants come of their own accord; the sample isn’t random, devices and screens differ, and attention wanders. So we present our results not as “proof” but as an interesting observation to compare with the literature. Measurements like reaction time also include device latency.

How is your data used?

Your experiment answers are anonymous: your name, email or IP address is never published with them. We keep your IP address only to prevent abuse, and only in one-way hashed (irreversible) form. For experiments with enough responses, the anonymous answers can be downloaded as open data in CSV format; the file contains no identifying information.

If you volunteer, we store your username, email and comments. From your account page you can download all your data as JSON, turn off notifications or delete your account. If you delete your account, your comments remain as “deleted participant” and your responses stay in the statistics anonymously.

Who makes it?

balabs is made by ba creative labs, an independent software studio in Istanbul. Experiment 001 is silence., a shared minute of silence every day. If you have an idea for an experiment, suggest it on the forum.
