For researchers

Method and open data.

We state openly how each experiment was adapted, what it measures and which answers it leaves out. Once an experiment has enough real participation, its anonymized data is published as open data automatically.

How we work

Every experiment is based on a study

The experiments are short, browser-based adaptations of published classic studies. What we changed is stated separately on each experiment's method card.

The first-answer rule

Each browser gets an anonymous participant number. Only the first answer to an experiment is stored as scientific data; for signed-in members a first answer given on another device also counts. Replays are kept only as leaderboard scores.

Bot filter

Requests that identify as bots, browser automation or search engines cannot submit answers and never enter the records. The number of participants that can be created from one network per hour and the number of answers a participant can send per hour are limited.

Validation and very fast answers

Every answer is checked on the server against the experiment's rules: out-of-range, incomplete or internally inconsistent submissions are rejected. In timed tasks, anticipatory responses (below 200 ms in Stroop and mental rotation, below 100 ms in reaction time) are left out of the median.

Simulation never gets in

Simulated rows that can be switched on to preview the site are flagged separately; they appear on the site labeled “sim.” and never enter the open data or the numbers on this page.

Automatic publication

Once an experiment reaches at least 200 eligible real first answers, its anonymized data is published that night. On the 1st of every month all datasets are refreshed in a new release; the last 12 releases stay available for download.

Sample

All real first answers that can enter the open data (from 3 October 2026 onward, excluding simulation and banned accounts). Because one person can take part in several experiments, the total across experiments is larger than the number of people.

Interface language

  • Interface in Turkish %7 (12)
  • Interface in English %0 (0)
  • Unknown %93 (169)

Device

  • Desktop %75 (135)
  • Phone %25 (46)
  • Tablet %0 (0)
  • Unknown %0 (0)

Language is the language of the interface in which the answer was given; language recording began in the first week of October 2026, so for earlier answers it is known only in experiments whose stimuli depend on the language. Device is the class reported by the browser (desktop, phone, tablet). We do not collect demographic information such as age, gender, country or education.

Limitations

  • Self-selected sample. Participants arrive on their own through shares and searches; the sample is not random and does not represent any population.
  • No demographics. Because we do not know age, gender or country, group comparisons and weighting are not possible.
  • Uncontrolled setting. Screen size, brightness, volume and distraction vary from person to person; timing and reaction measures also include device and browser latency.
  • Prior knowledge. Some classic experiments are known from popular culture. In experiments that ask, the “I've seen this before” report is a separate column in the data.
  • Anonymous identity is not perfect. The participant number is tied to the browser: the same person can take part again from another browser or via “Start a new experience”, and two people sharing a device can look like one participant.
  • Shortened tasks. Adaptations are shorter than the original studies and have few trials; individual scores are not reliable individual measurements and should be interpreted at the crowd level.

Ethics and privacy

Participation is voluntary, no account is needed and an experiment can be left at any moment. The registration consent and our data note have said from the first day that answers are used anonymously for statistics and open data; for this reason only answers from 3 October 2026 onward enter the open data.

  • The open data contains no identifiers, IP addresses, browser details, emails, nicknames, free-text answers, exact times or cross-experiment linkage. The row code is regenerated at random in every release.
  • If fewer than answers share the same day, language and device, the date is coarsened to the week, or to the month if needed, so that a rare answer cannot be recognized by its date.
  • For every experiment type, the fields that may be exported are listed one by one in an allowlist; no field outside the list ever enters a file.
  • If an experiment is switched off in the admin panel or excluded from open data, it is left out of later releases.
